What a character. I met Gert for lunch and was there 4 hours later.! Fascinating man with a great sense of fun. Gert speaks lots of languages, which as usual put me to shame.
Gert bought his first hotel, d'Ouwe Werf, in Stellenbosch after completing a year long stint at the Grant Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam as trainee in 1972.
A great example to his staff, youll see his distinct methods evident through out the hotel. He is also a major player in the broader tourism arena, serving on advice committees for the provincial government.

What this man knows about Route 62 is staggering and as stated on the introduction I think Route 62 is one of the best drives in the world.
To get to Gerts place you walk through the foyer and get a glimpse of the courtyard, lush green lawn and swimming pool area where guests unwind while enjoying the view of the nearby mountains. All 26 en-suite bedrooms offer air-conditioning and modern facilities to ensure an enjoyable stay.
After a delicious meal in the Wild Apricot Restaurant, which offers a choice of traditional and continental dishes, the residents pub, The Dog and Trumpet, is where pre-dinner drinks and after dinner night caps are served until late.
The Wellness Centre offer both beauty and health treatments, and include a hair studio and steam room. This, in combination with our heated mineral pool, ensures youll be spoiled before you continue your journey. The hotel is pet friendly* and offers the ideal convenient halfway stop-over between Cape Town and the Garden Route. In a region known for its hospitality the staff at the hotel offers a personable but professional service.
