Port Elizabeth situated in the Eastern Cape, 260 km from Knysna and 800km from Cape Town, PE, (as it is known) is renowned for its sunshine and safe sandy beaches. As well as being a major sea port and industrial centre, it is also a popular tourist destination especially for water sports enthusiasts and divers who can indulge their passions all year round thanks to the temperate climate and warm waters.

PE has man-made attractions, too, including the Historic Donkin Heritage trail, which guides the visitor in the footsteps of the 1820 settlers on their journey of discovery. The 5 km route visits 47 historical and architectural sites in the Old Hill area of central PE.
Often referred to as the crucible of South African history, Grahamstown and surrounding Frontier Country is a vibrant mix of all the best that Africa has to offer. One of the premier tourist routes in the Eastern Cape, it has a turbulent past with more forts than the rest of the country combined.
No longer the scene of conflict and strife, Frontier Country now embodies the spirit of unity amongst the many and varied cultures who met here many decades ago and made their mark - Khoi, Xhosa, Boer and British.
They brought with them a rich heritage that can still be seen today in towns and villages all over the Eastern Cape. The broad tree-lined streets and buildings of Grahamstown are the legacy of a time when this was the Cape's second city. Take time to walk through this historic centre and visit the Observatory Museum which houses one of only two Victorian Cameras Obscura in the world - the other is in Bath, England - with a magical mirror that reflects the town onto a large circular table.
Although tourist destinations in their own right, both PE and Grahamstown have a far greater significance for the overseas visitor they are the gateway to some of the most outstanding game reserves in Southern Africa.
